What Is Visibility in the Workplace?

Employee visibility essentially means getting recognition for your contribution and being included in all relevant company conversations and decisions. Understandably, this definition has developed new meaning as organisations have started to shift to a remote work environment.

Why Is Visibility in the Workplace Important?

To get ahead in your career, it pays to be visible – when people know who you are and what you can do, they are more likely to consider you for promotions or interesting assignments. And those who keep their head down often miss out, despite their hard work.

How Do You Gain Visibility at Work?

  1. Find and use your voice.
  2. Show initiative.
  3. Embrace networking.
  4. Be proactive at company events.
  5. Speak up during team meetings.
  6. Participate in other internal communication opportunities.
  7. Build stronger relationships.
  8. Leverage your strengths.
  9. Volunteer for high visibility projects.
  10. Share your impact.

What Does the Research Tell Us About Visibility in the Workplace?

Why Is Visibility Important for Leaders?

Being a trusted leader boils down to visibility. Visibility is key to building trust and ensuring accountability and safety. People believe what they can see. Employees need to observe that they are in a safe place – where there are no secrets, their boss is supportive and people aren’t going behind their backs.

What Is Visible Leadership?

Visible Leadership is the commitment of senior management to a culture of quality that aligns performance management practices with the organisation’s mission, regularly takes into account stakeholder feedback, and enables transparency about performance between leadership and staff.

Key Questions to Reflect on as a Leader:

  • Who is visible/ less visible in your workplace?
  • Does the culture of your workplace encourage people to step into the spotlight?
  • How has remote/ hybrid working impacted the visibility of different people?
  • How often do you own your achievements?
  • How do you champion others and help them to showcase their achievements?
  • How might you increase your own visibility in the workplace?

When it comes to authentic and courageous leadership, Hannah is unbeatable. Her value-driven approach allows her to be precise and focused whilst taking an empathic approach. One of the leadership traits I admire the most in Hannah is her commitment to asking the difficult questions that others avoid, and this has been evident in her work encouraging Diverse Leaders. She is fearless and highly skilled at driving change, even in complex situations. Hannah is a catalyst and can cause a mindset shift in one conversation. Her leadership creates leaders.
